History
Sumberawan Singosari Temple is a relic Singosari Kingdom which was discovered in 1904. Sumberawan Singosari Temple was visited by the antiquities service in 1935, then in 1937 restoration was carried out around the temple area.
Initially the restoration was only carried out at the foot of the temple, while other parts were carried out on an emergency basis. During the restoration process, a water source was found right under the temple. However, the water flow eventually seeped into several places after the restoration process was complete.
The guard of the temple said that under the Rawan Temple flows holy water which is called Water Amerta or which means Water of Eternity. The sanctity of this water flow is proven by the strength of the ascetics who have performed rituals in this temple.
According to an expert on the history of Sumberawan Temple, this temple was built in the 14th to 15th centuries AD. During the Majapahit Kingdom, King Hayam Wuruk also visited the location of the Sumberawan Singosari Temple in 1359 AD.
Because it has a fairly strong holy aura, in the Negarakertagama book it is written that the area around the Sumberawan Singosari Temple is called “Kasuranggan”. The word “Kasuranggan” itself means a garden filled with angels or nymphs, or the modern language is “Garden of Angels”.
According to the historical story of Sumberawan Temple, the name Sumberawan comes from two basic words, namely “source” and “prone”. These two words more or less mean a source that comes from a swamp or a swamp. Rawan Temple has a quite unique building shape, the temple has only a single shape which only consists of the legs, body, and also the head which is tapered towards the top.
What’s unique is that the walls of this temple are also very plain with no reliefs and no stairs going up. This is very inversely proportional to the majority of historical heritage temples in Indonesia.
The geometric shape of the temple building that combines circular and square shapes is a very unique combination.
Rawan Temple is also the only temple with a stupa shape in East Java. The shape of the temple which consists of a stupa is believed by the community to be a relic of Buddhists who lived during the Singosari Kingdom era.
Until now, the location of Rawan Temple is still used as a place of worship by Buddhists in Malang.
